The CW officially renewed One Tree Hill for an eighth season on May 18, 2010, with a 13-episode order. The season premiered on September 14, 2010 and airs in its new timeslot, Tuesdays at 8/7c. After successful ratings for the early episodes of the season, the network ordered a back-order of nine episodes, bringing the total episode count to 22.

Season 8 features the return of the original opening credits and the original opening theme song “I Don’t Want to Be” covered by various artists each week, while the original version is featured sporadically. Schwahn wrote 13 out of the 22 episodes, including the final 6 episodes of the season.

The CW officially renewed One Tree Hill for a seventh season on February 25, 2009. It premiered on September 14, 2009. Season seven is the first season not to include original cast members, Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton. After successful ratings for the first three episodes, The CW gave the series a full-season order of 22 episodes.

Season seven regular cast members returning from season 6 are James Lafferty, Bethany Joy Galeotti, Sophia Bush, Austin Nichols, Jackson Brundage, Lee Norris, Antwon Tanner, Lisa Goldstein and Paul Johansson. While new characters Robert Buckley, Shantel VanSanten and Jana Kramer join the cast in the season premiere.
